Breast Revision Surgery Scarring After Your Breast Lift / Breast Reduction

Written by:

Patients who undergo breast reduction and breast lift surgeries combined with augmentations will have scars. Dr. Linder performs breast revision, breast reduction, and breast lift surgeries from patients throughout the world, including his Beverly Hills practice as well as Las Vegas, Nevada.

Breast revisions that require scars associated with the formal mastopexy or vertical lift can be very unpredictable. Patients must have realistic expectations when undergoing any form of mastopexy or breast reduction surgery. Scarring can never be predictable. Let me repeat this, scarring can never be 100% predictable, regardless of how your cesarian section scar appeared to heal. When you apply tension and stress to an incision, the tendency for scars to hypertrophy, keloid, widespread or become pigmented is greatly increased. That is why we inform our patients, both verbally as well as with consent forms, that the scarring is unpredictable and that we can never guarantee the final result. As a result, when a patient will undergo a breast lift or a breast reduction, she must be cognizant and realistic as to the worst possible outcomes which can include horrific scarring.

We have seen patients throughout the world who have presented with all types of scarring. The scarring can be widespread, which can be associated with simply the scar widening due to tension, it can be associated with hypertrophic or keloid where the scar is thick and raised. It can be associated with discoloration such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation which can be seen more commonly in African-American and Latin women or women of Asian descent.

It is extremely important that the woman undergoing surgery for breast lifts and breast reductions realize that the scar can never be completely guaranteed as to its final outcome. If you are completely against scarring or worried of the final scar outcome, then you should consider not having the surgery performed or at least wait a period of time until you feel that the pros outweigh the cons or negatives.
